I'm from here

I'm from there

But I'm not from anywhere

Pero no tengo hogar

I'm not white

I'm not brown

So what am I ?

Leo esto

Leo el otro

Pero no sé leer

I eat rice and beans

I eat turkey and gravy

But I don't eat enough of either

Me ven americana

Me ven mexicana

What is the purpose of the SHL blog?

This blog aims to be a sample of a diverse set of expressions among languages and cultures in contact. Students in Spanish 308 not only explore in their Obra Creativa the different realities and social dynamics of people in diverse Spanish speaking cultures in contact with other languages and cultures, but also they discuss and introspectively examine their experiences as well as their own attitudes and perceptions.

¿Cuál es el propósito del SHL blog?

Este blog pretende ser una muestra de las posibles y diversas expresiones de lenguas y culturas en contacto. Los estudiantes de Español 308 exploran en su Obra Creativa no solo las distintas realidades y dinámicas sociales de las personas de diversas culturas que hablan español y una o más lenguas, sino que también discuten y examinan introspectivamente sus experiencias, así como sus propias percepciones y actitudes.

What is Spanish 308?

The main focus of Spanish 308, Lengua y Cultura: Comunidades Bilingües is to explore the many linguistic communities where Spanish comes in contact with other languages and cultures. This course was designed by professors with an extensive background in Sociolinguistic comparison. Our goal is to provide a class environment that offers students (both heritage and non-heritage) the opportunity of exploring the diverse and complex social dynamics of multilingual and multicultural communities. Students will study Spanish language beginning with its historic origins and its growth into the different regional and dialectal varieties that currently exist in the United States and in other countries throughout the world.

¿Qué estudiamos en Español 308?

El enfoque de la clase Comunidades Bilingües como su nombre lo dice, es el de explorar las muchas comunidades lingüísticas en donde el español se encuentra en contacto con otras lenguas y culturas. Los profesores de Español 308 tratamos de ofrecer una visión completamente enfocada en la sociolingüística. En el curso de SPAN 308, los estudiantes exploran las distintas y complejas dinámicas sociales y lingüísticas de estas comunidades multilingües y multiculturales. Estudiamos la lengua española desde sus orígenes históricos, así como las diferentes variedades que existen en la actualidad en los Estados Unidos, América Latina, España, África y Asia.

What is the Spanish Heritage Language (SHL) Program?

The SHL program is designed for students that, due to various reasons, grew up speaking Spanish at home (or other spaces outside of a formal classroom context) and who want to recover and/or develop their heritage linguistic abilities. Moreover, in this program students from a Spanish heritage can also explore topics related to their own cultural background. It is important to point out that the SHL program is open to all students: (It is not limited to just Spanish heritage students). The SHL program helps enrich our academic offerings for non‐heritage speakers (monolingual English speakers) by providing valuable insights into this vital segment of the US population/culture.

¿En qué consiste el Programa de Español como Lengua de Herencia?

En este programa los profesores de español nos enfocamos principalmente en los estudiantes que por muy diversas razones crecieron hablando español en casa (u otros espacios fuera del contexto formal del salón de clases) y que desean recuperar y/o desarrollar sus habilidades lingüísticas, así como explorar temas relacionados con su propia su riqueza cultural.
